Ich habe grad mal schnell nachgezählt: in meiner Sammlung befinden sich genau 158 Singles – plus jene, die als Bestandteil von Boxsets oder LPs nicht in meinem 7″-Regal untergebracht sind. Warum ich das an dieser Stelle erwähne? Weil kein Geringerer als Paul McCartney grad die Veröffentlichung eines karriereumspannenden Boxsets angekündigt hat, das nicht weniger als 80 (!) Seven Inches enthält (der Sänger hat in diesem Jahr seinen 80. Geburtstag gefeiert). Mit dem Erwerb könnte ich meine Sammlung also auf die Schnelle um 50% erhöhen. Natürlich ist das Ganze aber kein ganz günstiges Vergnügen.
Ein halbes Jahrhundert Musik in einem Boxset
Die Zusammenstellung der Singles ist von Paul McCartney höchstpersönlich kuratiert worden. Insgesamt umfasst das Boxset 163 Songs bzw. zehn Stunden Musik aus dem musikalischen Schaffen des Songwriters, das mittlerweile mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert umfasst. Jede Box umfasst dabei eine zufällig ausgewählte, exklusive Testpressung einer der Singles. Außerdem erhalten Fans ein 148seitiges Buch mit einem persönlichen Vorwort von McCartney, einem Essay von Musikjournalist Rob Sheffield, ausführlichen Infos über Chartsplatzierungen, Linernotes und das offizielle Artwork der Singles.
Als kleiner Vorgeschmack wurden die 2022 remasterten Mono-Versionen von ‘Uncle Albert’/Admiral Halsey’ and ‘Too Many People’ veröffentlicht:

15 der Singles sind im übrigen bislang niemals im 7″-Format veröffentlicht worden, sondern lediglich als 12″, Picture Disc, CD oder digitaler Download. Bei den übrigen 65 Singles handelt es sich um Singles und Promos mit dem originalen Artwork, die in elf verschiedenen Ländern released worden sind (die komplette Tracklist gibt es am Ende des Artikels). Der Künstler selbst sagte in einem Statement: „Ich hoffe, dass die Songs schöne Erinnerungen zurück bringen. Das tun sie für mich, und es wird noch mehr kommen.“ Insbesondere der letzte Satz dürfte Fans hellhörig werden lassen.
Die im Boxset enthaltenen Songs sind – wie könnte es anders sein – in den legendären Abbey Road Studios in London remastered worden. Die Singles sind in einer schicken Holzkiste verpackt, die im britischen Derbyshire gefertigt wurden. Das Boxset ist auf 3000 Exemplare limitiert. Heißt : im Presswerk sind für die Veröffentlichung mal eben 240.000 Seven Inches gepresst worden. In Worten: zweihundertvierzigtausend – das muss man sich mal auf der Zunge zergehen lassen! Trotzdem ist angesichts der nicht ganz kleinen Fangemeinde des Ex-Beatles davon auszugehen, dass diese schnell weg gehen werden.
