The Sound Burger returns! Audio-Technica brings back portable record player

Most readers may still remember consuming music on their walkman or discman. Later there were MP3 players or the iPod, while today music is mostly consumed on smartphones via Spotify and other audio streaming providers. But does anyone still remember the “Sound Burger” that made it possible to enjoy music on vinyl at a picnic or at the beach? If not, you now have the opportunity to experience the joy of a portable turntable once again.

In 2022, the Japanese audio equipment manufacturer Audio-Technica celebrated its 60th anniversary. As part of the celebrations the so-called “Sound Burger” is being reintroduced almost 40 years after its initial release. The Sound Burger is a portable record player that allows you, for example, to sit in a park during the summer and listen to vinyl records. The battery is said to last for approximately 12 hours.

Retro aesthetics with a modern touch

The reissue of the Sound Burger combines the original retro look and aesthetics with contemporary updates. In addition to the USB-C charging function, the record player is Bluetooth compatible. The use of a high-precision direct current motor ensures constant rotation, and the aluminum die-cast platter comes with a damping design. Accessories included are a 45 RPM adapter, a RCA audio cable and a USB charging cable. The needle of the Sound Burger can be replaced with the ATN3600L, which needs to be purchased separately.

First edition sold out, restock available in three colors

All of this looks quite stylish and as a child of the 1980s, the aesthetics do have something appealing to me. To be honest I really don’t know whether I would actually use the Sound Burger in reality… but apparently other vinyl nerds have no concerns regarding the functionality. Audio-Technica seems to have struck a chord with the reissue, as the first edition of allegedly 7,000 units worldwide was sold out within a few days of its release.

Yet the demand seems to be way higher, as many disappointed customers commented on Instagram that they weren’t able to purchase a device. The announcement of a restock was quick and only logical. A couple of days ago Audio-Technica announced that the Sound Burger will be available again – now in three different colours: black, white and yellow. It is listed for a price of 199$ online. It is temporarily out of stock, but more stock of the new Sound Burger is on the way. Audio-Technica tells you to keep an eye on their social channels for updates.
